At approximately 11:15 PM on Wednesday May 25, 2022, City of Nanaimo Fire and Rescue crews and police responded to a fire at the public dock located at the Brannen Lake boat launch area. Owner of found kayak comes forward safe and sound

220526 - RCMP News release

“I am so embarrassed but yet extremely grateful to know that there are first responders trained and ready to respond to these kinds of situations “, said Allison Wasserman, owner of the kayak found floating in the Nanaimo River.

Wasserman called the Nanaimo RCMP Wednesday May 25th to let them know she was the owner of the kayak that was found floating in the Nanaimo River on Tuesday May 24, 2022. Wasserman said that  she and her family had set out around noon on Sunday May 22, and put their kayaks in the river, just below the Cedar bridge. Just a short time later she ran into some trouble and ended up being flipped out of her kayak.

She was bruised and suffered some cuts but managed to make her way out of the water and up onto the shore.  She said the water was moving fast and the kayak was stuck under some log booms so they decided to leave it in place. The water levels in the river were expected to fall on Wednesday so they planned on retrieving it then.

Before they could retrieve it, she learned that her adventure had made its way to the local news. Wasserman called the RCMP Wednesday evening and shared her story. “I realize now that I should have reported it but with everything happening it just slipped my mind. I would though like to extend a heartfelt thank you and a sincere apology to all of the first responders who attended. I have learned a valuable lesson”, said Wasserman.

Fire # 2 Nanaimo file 2022-11236 Just after 10 AM police and fire crews responded to a fire under a pedestrian bridge that is located on the west side of John Barsby Secondary, and just metres from the garden shed fire. When police arrived, fire crews had extinguished the blaze. Fire investigators determined the fire was suspicious in nature as it appears wood had been bundled under the bridge then set on fire. Fire crews told police that while they were attending to the fire, they saw an individual walking away from the area, and that they were able to take a picture of the person before her left the area. When police looked at the picture, it appeared that this person matched the description of the person seen near the first fire.

Fire # 3 Nanaimo file number 2022-11992 Sometime overnight on Friday April 9, 2022 a canvas car seat and candle were taken from the front porch of a home in the 700 block of Stirling Ave, then placed on the back porch of a nearby home. The seat cover was set on fire but melted before the fire could spread. There are no suspects or video evidence of the theft or fire.

While the third fire cannot be connected to the first two fires, investigators recognized that the location of the fire is approximately a six-minute walk from the other locations.

“All three of these fires are troubling because it appears that they were all intentionally set and occurred within a short distance of each other. Home owners need to be vigilant and report any suspicious fires or persons to the police”, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The person of interest is described as a Caucasian man, slim build with long brown hair, and wearing a blue ski jacket, and track pants with a white stripe along the side. Of note, he had a white scooter with him.

If anyone has information on any of these fires or the person shown in the attached photo, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.

The man who was reported to have fallen into the water is believed to be her 59-year-old partner whom she resided with on their sailboat. A search of their vessel, shoreline and ping of his cell phone proved negative. Throughout the evening, the Canadian Coast guard hover craft and Search and Rescue helicopter, along with the Port Authority vessel and ground crews extensively searched the waters and shoreline with negative results.

This morning, the search continued with two RCMP Marine Section vessels and the RCMP Dive Team scouring the waters off the shoreline of Nanaimo. “There is nothing to indicate at this time that criminality is involved and investigators are working on the premise that the missing man fell into the water and presumably drowned”, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Couple and their pets injured by hit-and-run driver

The Nanaimo RCMP is looking for witnesses to a serious pedestrian hit and run in which two pedestrians and their two dogs were struck. The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 PM on Friday March 4, 2022 on Lorenzen Lane, at the end of Superior Road.

Police, EHS and Lantzville Fire responded. At the scene, investigators were met by Geoff, last name withheld, who told police that he and his wife June and their two dogs Marley and Taz, had just been struck by a black SUV, that drove off after striking them. His wife had already been triaged at the scene by attending paramedics and transported to the Nanaimo hospital.

Geoff said that they were walking single file along the shoulder of the road facing oncoming traffic with June in the rear. Both he and June had control of one dog each and that the dogs were on a short leash. Geoff said that without any advance warning a vehicle approached from behind them and drove directly into June. The force of the collision pushed June into Geoff then all four of them fell into the ditch on their left. Geoff managed to crawl out to the roadway and saw that the suspect vehicle had stopped a short distance from them. He yelled for the driver to help but the vehicle then sped off towards Superior Road. Minutes later Geoff flagged down another vehicle and had the driver call 911.

June was transported to the Nanaimo hospital with significant non-life threatening injuries while Geoff sustained soft tissue bruising. One of their dogs was seriously injured and required surgery to repair one of its legs. The other dog suffered serious bruising. The suspect vehicle sustained damage to the front on the driver's side as pieces of the vehicle were found at the scene. Geoff told police it was a clear day, there were no other vehicles or pedestrians in the area and neither he nor June heard the vehicle approaching.
