Nanaimo Food Hub’s Friday Farm Market Returns

with Fresh Food and New Online Ordering Option

Weekly summer market adds innovative REKO Ring system and student-grown produce at Discovery Montessori Farm School

The Nanaimo Food Hub’s Friday Farm Market is back for a second season beginning June 27 at Discovery Montessori Farm School. Running every Friday through August 29 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the weekly market offers a vibrant, food-focused selection of fresh vegetables, free-range eggs, locally raised meats, flowers, artisan breads, and other handcrafted goods—grown and made right here in the region.

“Last year was an overwhelming success,” says Tina Fabbro, Market Coordinator at the Nanaimo Food Hub. “The support from our community was truly inspiring. The market quickly became a community favourite, and we couldn’t be happier to share more locally grown food with our friends and neighbours.”

A New Way to Shop Local: REKO Ring Launches in Nanaimo

New this season is the launch of Nanaimo’s own REKO Ring—an innovative online ordering model originally developed in Scandinavia. REKO (short for “Fair Consumption”) connects customers directly with local farmers through a private Facebook group, where they can pre-order items from multiple producers and pick them up in one stop—at the Friday Farm Market.

“This system is a win-win,” says Fabbro. “Farmers only harvest what’s been ordered, reducing waste, and customers enjoy easy access to a wide variety of products with just one pickup.”

Growing Together: A Gift of Land and a Vision for the Future

Thanks to a generous land donation from Discovery Montessori Farm School, the Food Hub has begun growing its own crops, which will be sold at the market to help fund infrastructure needs like cold and dry storage.

“This land use donation allows us to build long-term capacity for local food aggregation and distribution,” says Rhianna Solomon, farmer and cofounder of the Nanaimo Food Hub. “In a changing climate, sustainable food production is growing in the community, including continuing to sell the amazing produce grown by the students to ensure the school remains an active and supported part of this local food system.”
